It's been a few days so might as well get into this Eternals review! It will be spoiler free just in case no one has seen it but I will give my thoughts and overall grade at the end so much sure you read till then! Oh and shoutout to the man Stephen (@StrangeSJP) for the artwork, give him a follow because his work is great!
Before we start, let's run down the cast and everyone who made up this movie:
Chloe Zhao as Director/Screenplay Writer
Gemma Chan as Sersi
Richard Madden as Ikaris
Angelina Jolie as Thena
Salma Hayek as Ajak
Kit Harington as Dane Whitman
Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo
Lia McHugh as Sprite
Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos
Lauren Ridloff as Makkari
Barry Keoghan as Druig
Ma Dong-seok as Gilgamesh
Harish Patel as Karun
If you just read this casting list and not have any idea of what the movie is about or what franchise it's in, you probably automatically love it like I do! It has a good mix of well known actors and semi known ones, but they all do amazing in this movie and they all had their chance to shine in different moments! I honestly can't pick a favorite character because I really liked them all, but if I were to choose three then I would say Thena, Druig and Phastos! Now let's get to the actual movie!
Now, I know everyone has seen or heard the Rotten Tomatoes scores and seen the reviews from critics that this movie is not it and it was a disappointment. Well, I'm here to tell you that I absolutely LOVED this movie. I saw it with my fiancé on premiere night (she also loved it!) and then saw it again three days later and I normally don't do that. I think that a lot of people were expecting a movie like "Avengers: Endgame" with a ton of action and a connection between every character, but got something totally different. This movie told a story of beings called Eternals who came to earth to protect it from these evil creatures called Deviants. The Eternals were created by these cosmic size beings called Celestials an could only interfere if the Deviants were around. How long have these Eternals been around? Around 7,000 years so they have seen and been apart of some of the biggest things in history. The movie does a good job at explaining the MCU events that we've seen like Thanos and other wars, and if you know me then you know I love connections like that! Another thing that was great were the visuals and hoe breathtaking some of the images were. Director Chloe Zhao does a phenomenal job at showing us the different places and time periods on earth that the Eternals have been to. We also get to see the main Celestial named Arishem and those shots were incredible!
Let's talk a bit about the emotion of the movie. I tweeted this out right after my first viewing and I stand by it after the second and that is "Love, passion, loyalty, trust, betrayal and sacrifice." all of these come at different moments and times in the movie, but they all are great moments. I walked into this movie having no real expectations because it was something new and different so I really couldn't predict what I would be seeing, but I can tell you now that after seeing this movie twice that the critics really reviewed this movie wrong. I respect everyone's opinions and everyone does have that right but in my honest opinion, this movie is fantastic. The last thing that I'll discuss that I thought was excellent were the post credit scenes. Yes, we get two after the film so make sure you stay and wait it out. But without spoiling anything, I am really excited for the next few projects from Marvel Studios because it will be special!
On to some of the things that I thought could be different. First is something that I can't really change and that's the length. I talk about it all the time at how shorter projects leave you wanting more, well longer projects like Eternals which is 2 hours and 30 minuets long do have parts that drag a bit but again it's due to the length. Another issue I had was that I wished some of the characters had longer screen time or a longer storyline. Lastly is something that I truly believe Marvel lacks at and that's making the "bad guy" a huge part of the story. Later on in the movie, we meet the "leader" of the Deviants named Kro and he really didn't have a last impression on me. I wish we got to see more of him and what he really was about. I really cannot find any HUGE problems with this movie and that's impressive to me.
Overall, Marvel tried something new and some people hated it while others loved it. From now on, I will not view the scores or critiques that people give as a reliable source. I will go see the movie then make my own opinion on the film. "Eternals" gets an 8/10!
